Kendo Nagasaki

My boyfriend and I watched an episode of the old BBC arts programme, ‘Arena’, last weekend on BBC Four, and they showed an episode all about Kendo Nagasaki. The premise of the show was that TV producer Paul Yates had read a Sunday Times interview with the painter Peter Blake, who had professed to being a big fan of Kendo, the famous masked wrestler.

Paul decided that this would make a programme, if he got the two of them together, Peter could meet his hero, do a spot of painting, and perhaps Paul could gain an exclusive interview.

Sounds a bit strange, but was actually absolutely entrancing to watch. One of the best things I’ve seen on TV in a long time. The programme just had a great atmosphere, it was like being sucked into another world for an hour…a la ‘Tales of the Unexpected’…go on, you want to jump up and dance now like the woman did on the title sequence…

da, da, da, da-da-da da, da, da, da-da-da…
