Bill Hicks, bad accents, and Birmingham

I’ve been listening to copies of Bill Hicks routines that my other half kindly burned for me (sorry Bill, hope you’ll forgive me, wherever you are) in the car to and fro work - breaks up the monotony of the radio, and hey, I need to laugh on my way to work - don’t we all?

After listening to the first release ‘Dangerous’ avidly, and then ‘Relentless’, I switched on ‘Arizona Bay’ tonight. Bill likes to attempt English accents (lots of other accents too) now and again, and like all good Americans, he makes a mess of them, but it’s still funny hearing this quasi-Cockney-Australian-posh-goddamn-awful attempt at an English accent coming out of the mouth of this late, much loved, vitriolic Texan.

Tonight, I was listening to this one skit where he talks about how crime in England is nothing compared to the US. This CD was recorded around the time of the LA riots.

“Hooligans kicked some dustbins on Shaftesbury Avenue”, hoots Bill in his ‘English’ accent.

All I would say is, Bill, if you’re watching from the Other Side, take a good look at what’s going down in Lozells, Birmingham at the minute. If you thought all English people talked like Dick Van Dyke, ate bad food, loved ’soccer’ and were too polite to do crime, you were SORELY mistaken.

If only it WERE some hooligans kicking bins along Shaftesbury Avenue..
