Good Noise: Volume 9
Welcome to the latest chapter of Good Noise, where every week I unveil a quintet of delectable musical treats for you to check out. Here’s this week’s top 5 picks from me:
1) I love this song so much - it’s from a Seattle based husband-wife duo who go under the moniker of No-Fi Soul Rebellion. Their music was recommended to me by the booker at the infamous Seattle music venue, The Crocodile Cafe - which, incidentally, I got chucked out of by over-zealous security when I was 19 because I tried to sneak in to see the final show by one of my favourite Seattle bands, Goodness, who I recommended in last week’s edition of Good Noise. Yes, I was very upset when I got booted out the door, I didn’t even want to drink alcohol, just wanted to see the music. Damn those poxy 21+ show rules. Goodness did a shout-out for me during the show, but it would’ve been better if I’d actually been able to ATTEND the show. Anyway, to come back to the original topic in hand, I love this song because it has a big stomping beat, great vocals, and it makes me bob my head up and down like a pigeon:

2) I’ve been trying to find this song to listen to on the internet for weeks, and finally, the man himself put the track back on his myspace page, and I thank the gods for that small mercy, because now I can introduce you to one of my favourite songs of the moment. Meet The Polish Ambassador, a shell-suit wearing Chicago based artist who has a very healthy obsession with beats and beats and more beats, and 80s computer games sounds. If you like most of the above, then you’ll love this song. Check out his flickr page too - his photos are great, and some are VERY funny:

3) This band sent music in to Pulse Rated recently, which is how I found out about them, and I’m glad they sent their music in, because it’s great. The band is Feddy, they’re based in St Petersburg in Russia, and they write really good hi-energy power-pop-rock tunes that make you want to pogo up and down:

4) Here’s some funk to put a smile on your face. The Funktion is a one-man band - a Manchester based artist who is in love with the 80s, and I’m very glad he is, because what he does, he does very well, and what he does is 80s style Prince type tunes that are very funky. I’m not sure whether it’s tongue in cheek and a homage to that style of music, or genuine. Either way, it sounds good if you like this kind of thing:

5) I saw this band play at the Secret Garden Party festival in August ‘06, and they were really really good, and they’re a lovely bunch of guys as well. They’ve just renamed themselves to The Brute Chorus, but this song was released under their original name of Low Sparks. It’s a great song and I like the fact that are not reliant on guitars for their music, as is evident in this song, and I think it makes their sound all the more unique and stronger for it:
