Good Noise: Volume 27

A little late (as usual) but here is last weekend’s Good Noise, and I’ve gone on a bit of a grrrl-fest this week, picking 5 top tunes by 5 top bands with female vocalists.

1) A little slice of tripped-out gorgeousness from NY femme-trio Luscious Jackson, who used to reside musically on the Beastie Boys label, Grand Royal, before it had to shut down in early 2004. Seems like major label Capitol Records has since snapped ‘em up, and they’re releasing a ‘Greatest Hits’ compilation:

2) The band that spawned former XFM presenter and now general TV presentery-type-person Lauren Laverne, this Sunderland quartet careered onto the 90s indie scene and their flame burned briefly and brightly. This song is off their first album, In The Club, which was released 10 years ago…god I am starting to feel old:

3) Dirty dirty rock ‘n’ sleaze-roll from this NYC foursome - I met them a couple of years ago when they played Wolverhampton Little Civic, really nice bunch of guys:

4) I find it hard to believe that I’ve got to volume 27 of Good Noise and not recommended this band. Anyway, this is the latest outfit fronted by the hardest woman with the loudest and rawest throat I have ever had the pleasure to meet - Tairrie B. She put out a rap album on Eazy-E’s Comptown Records label before moving onto rap-metal quartet Manhole (one of my favourite ever bands) and then progressing into full on METAL with My Ruin. I’ve met her twice and she is lovely, and I met the latest incarnation of My Ruin when they played Norwich in July last year and the boys are all beautiful funny people as well. I found their last release, 2005’s ‘The Brutal Language’ a bit too heavy for my taste most of the time, so I’m recommending a track from an earlier album of theirs, ‘The Horror of Beauty’, which was released in 2003. To listen to the track, click on the link below and then hit ‘download’:

5) Yeah, I’m also laughing myself that I’ve gone from two American bands that are pure rock ‘n’ roll, to a 90s Britpop band…but what can I say, it’s demonstrative of my wide ranging musical tastes. Yes, I liked Sleeper, got a problem with that? Frontwoman Louise Wener is now an author, not sure what the other three ’sleeperblokes’ are up to…and if you don’t know what that phrase means, then read their bio on the myspace page below and all will be revealed…:
