Sacred

Yesterday, I went to an exhibition at the British Library called Sacred, which is a collection of holy books and artefacts from the three Abrahamic faiths - Islam, Christianity, and Judaism.

It was great, and some of the books were most beautifully illustrated in both calligraphy style and also pictures. However, the pictures were mainly in the Christian books, as Islam and Judaism both agree that pictures shouldn’t be included as they detract from the word, although they both allow some illumination of the text.

There were also specimens from the Dead Sea Scrolls and ‘lost’ Gospels, and interactive elements dotted around the room, allowing you to test your knowledge, learn more from documentaries which were being screened on various TV screens, and also an area where you could leave your comments. I wanted to leave a comment but I couldn’t decide what to write. I think I was thinking too hard, on reflection I should’ve just noted how beautiful the articles were to look at.

The exhibition is open daily until 23rd September, you have to book in advance, but entry is free: www.bl.uk/sacred.
