Don’t make them like they used to…
They say you develop your musical tastes for life between the ages of 16-21, and I could see that such an idea could be true. I’ve just spent about half an hour watching 90s rock music videos on YouTube and thinking to myself, ‘They don’t make music like they used to’.
Below is a fine example - the debut single from Skunk Anansie, ‘Selling Jesus’, was a angry, oestrogen-filled tirade against the pedding of religion to the masses. Cue lead singer Skin going nuts and busting out some SHAPES with a white cross painted on her face throughout the entire video.
I remember my high school mates - who were very much into clubbing and whatever dance nonsense was out at the time - saying they would come to a rock concert with me. They went clubbing every Thursday, while I drank cider underage at the local rock pubs, and went to gigs the Wolverhampton Civic and Wulfrun Halls whenever I could cajole my dad into taking me - and my brother into picking me up : )
So, they came with me to see Skunk Anansie. They didn’t know what had hit them. Anyone who remembers this wonderful band knows that the lead singer…well, you didn’t mess with her. And their songs were NOT twee little ditties. I had a FABULOUS time. THEY spent a lot of time in the corridor being bored.
They left me to my rock chick ways after that. : ) Different strokes for different folks. I never returned the favour and went clubbing with them. Just wasn’t my bag at the time. And I realised that. I didn’t need to know what they were doing, I just KNEW I wouldn’t be into it. And I still think I was right : )
