A sound trick @ Tottenham Court Rd Tube

I’ve been meaning to blog on this for ages, as it’s something secret and exciting and free and easy to try and makes you giggle and I love things like this.

This comes courtesy of my mate James Adam who told me about this quite a while ago, and now every time I pass through Tottenham Court Road tube station, I make sure I do it.

For those of you familiar with the station, you will know that there is a cylindrical shaped room at the bottom of the escalators that you pass through to get to the Central Line - see the first photo below:

As you can see, I have drawn (with my superb Photoshop skillz, aiii) an arrow on the photo pointing to the circular tile right in the middle of the room’s floor. Yes? Ok, good. Now, the next time you are in that room, if you stand right on that tile - here’s a second photo with a closer view of the tile so you know exactly what I’m talking about:

….what was I saying? Oh yes, if you stand right on that tile, and make a noise, it echoes perfectly around the whole room, really rather loudly. So a burp would probably go down a storm.

I usually do a ‘oh!’ sound if I’m on my own, so it echoes just enough for my own personal amusement. If people are with me, I usually do actually stop stock still and emit a sound, because having people with me makes me less embarrassed about standing in circular rooms underground, making noises.

So, enjoy this little tidbit of information if you didn’t know it already and send me any pics of you enjoying this little secret trick of sonority, and I shall put them up on the site.

I like a nice resounding “OMMMM” in that spot - if you get it right, it feels like it’s a huge sound driving right into the middle of your head!

Oooooh…..sonically screwdriving your own head with just your voice and flanked by confused commuters…I like it…very art school : )
