This was my Easter

So I worked today because as a shift worker, I don’t get Bank Holidays…well, at least when they’re scheduled. I get the days in lieu, so that’s good cos then I can schedule my own Bank Holidays….’Mary Holidays’ if you will. So, basically, I just get much more annual leave. Which is cool.

This means I also worked on Good Friday so this past weekend has been pretty normal for me. Well, I suppose it has and it hasn’t. It was normal in that I had two days off. It was normal in that I had a lie-in….which is actually not that normal for me. I’m usually off scurrying around doing something or t’other.

It wasn’t normal in that I had to go and be on BBC Radio Berkshire on Saturday morning in the name of The Royal Windsor Rollergirls and my sport of roller derby.

So on Saturday morning, I woke up about 7.30 and groaned when I saw the grey skies through my blinds and heard the rain. Still, I dragged myself out of bed and rollerdolled myself from top to toe in black ‘n’ blue (clothing) and drove down the M4 to Reading, to Caversham Park, which is where both BBC Radio Berkshire and also BBC Monitoring is based. Lovely and quiet, set in lush green grounds…very nice!

Had a classic episode of ‘it’s a small world’ when I found out the show’s producer was actually a friend of a friend, then me and Jess (aka Jess of the Derbykills) went on air to talk derby to none other than Henry Kelly - yes, THAT Henry Kelly. Still very tall, still very Irish….it was all over and done in 5 minutes. If you fancy a giggle, then you can listen back to the clip here:

Skip into to around 1 hr 42 minutes to catch the interview.

So what else wasn’t normal about Easter Weekend? Well, the fact that it was so nice and quiet commuting to work today and also on Friday. London’s been deserted a la 28 Days Later stylee. Sans zombies and Cillian Murphy. So that was nice. Well, Cillian might’ve been knocking around but in his real life capacity (waves hands) ya know what I *mean*…

What else wasn’t normal? No skating. The school was closed for the holidays. Yes, bizarrely I’ve barely blogged on here about my life as a derby girl, and I would just like to stress it’s not because I don’t want to, it’s simply finding the time!! I’m hoping to reverse that. I do have some awesome photos and videos from my derby life that I hope to upload in the next few weeks.

Oh yeah - and I also make my bout debut on 15 May when Royal Windsor Rollergirls take on Lincolnshire Bombers Roller Girls at Newark Showground, Nottinghamshire. I’d love to see some of you lining the track, shouting for me…you can shout ‘Mary’, or ‘Red Arrow’. Oh yeah, Red Arrow’s my skate name…
